Hong Kong Innovative Display Technology Limited (i-Display) is a startup supported by HKUST and HKSAR Government. The company provides E-paper products, Electronic Smart Label (ESL) solution, various display, and optical devices. Its partners include well-known names like HKTDC, Lane Crawford, etc.

Incorporated in 2014, i-Display is founded by two PhD and one Mphil graduates from HKUST in Hong Kong. Its Proof-of-Concept Fund was first raised back in June 2014 as they came in fourth among the 12 shortlisted teams in the 1-Million-dollar entrepreneurship competition organized by the school. A month later, they received the Second Prize in the Inno-China Entrepreneurship Competition.  In October of the same year, i-Display was officially established with the raised Angel Fund. The years before the product was finally launched in May 2017, they enrolled in the campus Entrepreneurship Program and received TSSSU funding for two consecutive years.

Value Creation for Customers

i-Display strives to bring various benefits to its customers, which are often supermarkets and stores. Taking its ESL solution as an example, the labels can be used for displaying product pricing and even advertisements on shelves. By doing so, it helps to boost sales profits, save operating expenses, adjust price instantaneously, and improve company image.

By developing that particular product, the company has considered a series of strategies with the interest of the retailers in mind, helping them from micro to macro scope and in every way possible. For example, using the Advertag means taking the entire business online.  Not only it helps to create an online presence, it saves cost and time while eliminating human errors. The Wi-Fi connections also gives the best connectivity to all Advertags over the whole offline shop.  Advertag can then further connect and interact with the customers via Mobile App by NFC and BLE. Such convenience further extends to big data analysis, as sensors can be added to collect data such as customer location, retaining time, etc. This ultimately helps to hit their customers efficiently.  Extra income can as well be brought with the expansion of the customer network through advertising. All in all, the design of Advertag is highly comprehensive with a management software that can bring multiple advantages to the customers at the same time. 

The “Color” Revolution

There are many strong and respective competitors in the ESLs market, but i-Display focuses on the revolutionary full-color electronic price tag and that is the solution it has focused in developing on. Most of the electronic price tags available in the market are black and white. However, they have found the market demanding “color”, which is why the company is creating something new in hopes to create popular electronic products and become a successful business.

Speaking of technology advancement, designers of i-Display thoughtfully add in features that are user-friendly and environmental-friendly. With mobile payment, vendors can offer more payment options as the company’s ESL supports WeChat Pay, NFC payment, and many other contacts payment technologies. Whereas the ESL itself has a comparatively longer lifetime with its constant DC power supply avoiding the use of battery.  There are even unique holding tracks that secure the Advertag from stealing for the seller’s interest. All of which shows the detail-mindedness among the design which caters every little possible needs the customers may have. 

Making Hong Kong a Smart City

Mr. Ching describes the current ESL market is growing very fast.  As it becomes more and more common in countries including Japan, France, and US, i-Display remains its target on the local market. “We focus on Hong Kong, and we always listen to our local customers,” says Mr. Ching. With the company’s objective sets on contributing and improving Hong Kong, its solution will first be deployed in a local chain store, the Max Choice.  Currently, they are also looking for good partnership to increase its market penetration in this context and hiring more technical and marketing staff for expansion. 

Seeing the future, winning the Asia Business Achiever Award is said to be very important to everyone in the company as “it gives us the recognition of our ideas and our work”.
